Chinese Typing Speed: WPM, CPM and Accuracy

How equivalent WPM is calculated

CPM = correctly matched characters ÷ active minutes. Equivalent WPM = CPM ÷ 5. Accuracy = correct characters ÷ (correct characters + error attempts) × 100%.

For example, 80 correct characters and 20 error attempts over 60 active seconds give 80 CPM, 16 equivalent WPM and 80% accuracy. Matched punctuation and spaces count as characters too. Values are rounded to one decimal place.

Five characters per equivalent word is this tool's reporting convention, not Chinese word segmentation. It does not mean a Chinese word has five characters. Compare scores only when the text and scoring rules match; English and Chinese WPM are not directly interchangeable.

Strict character matching

Every displayed character is matched in order after Unicode NFC normalization. Punctuation, spaces, letter case and Simplified/Traditional differences are not skipped or substituted. A wrong character blocks the cursor. Repeated wrong attempts count separately, even after you correct them. Unreached text does not count as an error.

An IME commit may contain multiple characters. Matching stops at the first error, discarding the remaining batch. Once a paragraph is complete, the next paragraph loads; surplus characters are never scored against text you have not yet seen.

Active time and IME candidates

The timer starts when you click Start. Time spent choosing candidates, correcting errors or waiting inside an active test is included. Time under the resume overlay is excluded. Uncommitted candidates and text committed at or after the deadline do not count. An empty test produces zero speed and zero accuracy.

Reading the speed chart

The solid line measures correct characters committed over the last five active seconds, converted to equivalent WPM. During the first four seconds, the actual elapsed time is used. An IME phrase can produce a spike when it is committed. The dashed line is the whole-test average, not the arithmetic mean of the rolling points. Use the slider or data table to inspect individual seconds.

What counts as a good Chinese typing speed?

There is no benchmark on TypeMosaic based on a representative user sample yet. Instead of inventing an average, compare your own results using the same script, passage, duration, input method, hint setting and device. This is a practice tool, not an exam, recruitment certificate or verified leaderboard.
