From Pinyin hints to Chinese characters
This Pinyin-assisted practice uses original short sentences in Simplified and Traditional Chinese. Optional pronunciation appears above each Hanzi to help you find its spelling. Your system Pinyin IME still handles composition and candidate selection, while the test scores the committed Chinese text.
Choose a 30-second check or a one, two or five-minute test. At the end, review correctly matched characters per minute (Chinese CPM), accuracy, equivalent WPM and a second-by-second speed chart. Compare only sessions with the same script, passage, duration, input method and hint setting.
Help with Pinyin-assisted practice
Is this a Pinyin tone typing test?
No. Pinyin is a pronunciation hint here. Use your installed Pinyin IME to commit the matching Chinese characters; TypeMosaic scores the Hanzi and punctuation, not Latin letters or tone numbers.
Why does typing nihao not match 你好?
Switch your device to a Chinese Pinyin input method, type nihao, then choose and confirm 你好 from its candidates. The practice checks the Chinese characters you confirm, not the Latin letters. TypeMosaic does not convert Pinyin into Hanzi for you. Use the untimed 你好 check above before starting a timed practice.
Can I use Pinyin hints with Traditional Chinese?
Yes. Choose Simplified or Traditional under Chinese script before starting. Both have short passages with Pinyin hints. Set your system input method to output the same script: choosing Traditional here changes the practice text, not your keyboard settings.
How do I practise the same passage without Pinyin hints?
Turn off Pinyin hints before a practice starts, or choose Retry without hints after a result when that action is offered. Hint settings are locked during the timer. Saved results keep the hint setting, so compare hinted and unhinted attempts separately. For longer passages without pronunciation prompts, use the Chinese typing speed test linked on this page.
Why does a comma stop my Pinyin practice?
The hints apply to Hanzi, not punctuation. Match the Chinese comma ， or full stop 。 shown in the passage; a Latin comma , or period . is different. Check your input method’s punctuation setting and enter the symbol at the cursor to continue. A corrected mistake still counts toward accuracy.
Does Pinyin practice count letters or Chinese characters?
It counts correctly matched Chinese characters, punctuation and spaces per active minute (CPM), not the letters in nihao or the tone marks in nǐ hǎo. Time spent composing and choosing candidates is included while the test is active. Clicking away pauses the timer. Equivalent WPM is CPM divided by five, not a count of Chinese words.
